{"id":1041,"date":"2018-02-27T01:00:57","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T01:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/empoweringaction.org\/?p=1041"},"modified":"2018-02-27T01:00:57","modified_gmt":"2018-02-27T01:00:57","slug":"and-then","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/empoweringaction.org\/es\/and-then\/","title":{"rendered":"And Then?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pastor John MacArthur has stated the following about the Christian life,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cThe greatest consequence of unfaithfulness here on earth is that it disappoints Christ. First John 2:28 says, \u2018And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.\u2019 That is a sobering thought&#8211;we could be ashamed as we stand before the Lord. At the same time, it should encourage us with the prospect of receiving His lavish rewards if we serve Him faithfully during our time here on earth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This morning I read the story below from Octavious Winslow, who lived from 1808-1878, entitled \u201cAnd Then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is a wonderful reminder of the passage above, as well as the following words of Richard Baxter,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cIt will be an unspeakable comfort to look back on a life well spent. And to be able to say, \u2018My time was not cast away&#8230;It was spent on doing good to men&#8217;s souls and bodies.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A young man, whom he had known as a boy, came to an aged professor of a distinguished continental university, with a face beaming with delight, and informed him that the long and fondly-cherished desire of his heart was at length fulfilled \u2013 his parents having given their consent to his studying the profession of the law. As the university presided over by his friend was a distinguished one, he had repaired to its law school, and was resolved to spare no labor or expense in getting through his studies as quickly and ably as possible. In this strain he continued for some time; and when he paused, the old man, who had been listening to him with great patience and kindness, gently said, \u201cWell! and when you have finished your career of study, what do you mean to do then?\u201d \u201cThen I shall take my degree,\u201d answered the young man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d asked his venerable friend. \u201cAnd then,\u201d continued the youth, \u201cI shall have a number of difficult and knotty cases to manage: shall attract notice by my eloquence, and wit, and acuteness, and win a great reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d repeated the holy man. \u201cAnd then!\u201d replied the youth, \u201cwhy then there cannot be a question- I shall be promoted to some high office in the state, and I shall become rich.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d \u201cAnd then,\u201d pursued the young lawyer, \u201cthen I shall live comfortably and honorably in wealth and respect, and look forward to a quiet and happy old age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then?\u201d repeated the old man. \u201cAnd then,\u201d said the youth, \u201cand then- and then- and then I shall die.\u201d Here his venerable listener lifted up his voice, and again asked, with solemnity and emphasis\u2013 \u201cAnd then?\u201d Whereupon the aspiring student made no answer, but cast down his head, and in silence and thoughtfulness retired.<\/p>\n<p>This last \u201cAnd then?\u201d had pierced his heart like a sword- had darted like a flash of lightning into his soul, and he could not dislodge the impression. The result was, the entire change of his mind and course of his life.
